Why do I need a network? Networking multiple computers together allows the true potential of your computer to be realized.  It gives you easy access to files on each computer, sharing of printers or other peripheral devices or, if you like games, it allows for the fastest connection between computers possible.  That means you don't have to go to the office next door to hand someone a printed letter.  You could just print it to his printer!   Every now and then you might need to get a large file, that will not fit on a CD or DVD, but you need to get it to another computer as soon as possible.  Instead of stressing you could just have the person on the other computer get the file from your hard drive without even bothering you!
Will my network be secure? Of course!  It is not easy to steal resources from a wired network, but a wireless network does have security as a small drawback if configured improper.  However, wireless networks can be installed to be very secure.
What is better for me? Wired or Wireless? That depends mostly on you.  Do you need to roam from one room to another and still stay connected to your LAN and the Internet?  Do you live in a older house, where re-wiring would be to costly?  If you answered yes two either of these questions, wireless is what you need.
What if I want a wireless connection, but I still want the stability of wired? You can have a wired network, and still add a wireless connection, giving you the best of both worlds. You could plug your laptop into a wall outlet, and use the extra stability of a wired connection, but still be able to take out the cable and roam free using a wireless connection.
